Join us as we take a closer look at some of the fighters ahead of the Battle Of Brum, which descends on the Barclaycard Arena this October!
Macklin, Welborn and the Yafai brothers are all ready to go, but the big question is who's going to come up trumps in the main event…Gavin or Eggington?
Frankie Gavin
Record: W 22 / L 2 / D 0
Division: Welterweight
From: Birmingham, West Midlands
DOB: 28/09/1985
Turned Pro: 2009
Frankie Raymond Gavin, one half of the main event, is a former British and two-time Commonwealth Welterweight Champion. He also recently competed for the IBF Welterweight Championship against the undefeated Kelly Brook, and what a fight Gavin put up. He’ll be looking to bounce back against Eggington at the Battle of Brum!
Sam Eggington
Record: W 15 / L 2 / D 0
Division: Welterweight
From: Stourbridge, Worcestershire
DOB: 15/10/1993
Turned Pro: 2012
Trainer: Jon Pegg
He turn pro a few years ago and hasn’t looked back since. Eggington has gone from strength to strength and has already bagged a win here at the Barclaycard Arena last year. He now faces his toughest opponent in Frankie Gavin. Experience favours Gavin, youth favours Eggington – it’s going to be a cracking fight!
Kal Yafai
Record: W 16 / L 0 / D 0
Division: Super Flyweight
From: Birmingham, West Midlands
DOB: 11/06/1989
Turned Pro: 2012
Kal Yafai is no stranger to winning titles. The Birmingham born star relinquished both the Commonwealth Super Flyweight and the IBF Inter-Continental Super Flyweight belts to concentrate on dominating the Super Flyweight division. Something which I think the rest of the Super Flyweight’s weren’t too happy about!
Matthew Macklin
Record: W 33 / L 6 / D 0
Division: Middleweight
From: Birmingham, West Midlands
DOB: 14/05/1982
Turned Pro: 2001
Trainer: Jamie Moore
Matthew “Mack the Knife” Macklin brings a flavour of Ireland every time he steps into the ring. The Birmingham born British-Irish fighter has been a professional for the last 14 years and has racked up a total of 33 wins, which is impressive for any fighter. He’s a fans favourite and he’ll be looking to get the crowd pumping this October!
Gamal Yafai
Record: W 7 / L 0 / D 0
Division: Super Bantamweight
From: Birmingham, West Midlands
DOB: 04/08/1991
Turned Pro: 2014
Perhaps the most exciting fighter on the card, Gamal Yafai oozes natural ability along with the potential to go far. He claimed bronze at the 2010 European Amateur Boxing Championships in Moscow and he’s already part of the England elite squad. He’s raring to go and chomping at the bit to keep winning and keep progressing in the professional boxing world.
